Many people thought that Rashad Evans (17-0-1) was going to be a minor obstacle for Chuck Liddell (21-6), who was on his way back to the title.

But the sold-out crowd at Atlanta’s Philipps Arena was shocked when Rashad Evans knocked out the former UFC light-heavyweight champ, and sent Liddell crashing face-first onto the octagon floor. This is soon-to-be highlight reel material.

The event name “UFC 88: Breakthrough” is very fitting as Evans has claimed the biggest breakthrough of his career. Not to mention to pull off one of the biggest UFC upsets in recent memory. Read more

UFC Announcement: Randy Couture Returns to Fight Brock Lesnar in UFC 91

September 2, 2008 · Filed Under MMA News · Comment

randy coutureThe rumors have been confirmed. Dana White held a press conference today to announce that Randy Couture will be back fighting in the UFC. As you may already know, Zuffa (the company that owns UFC) had filed suit against Couture for a breach of contract. About a year ago, Randy Couture left the UFC because he was not satisfied with the compensation, felt he was not being treated with respect and wanted to Fedor whom the UFC could not sign. To make this long story short, Couture is back with new three-fight contract in the UFC.

And at no better time, Couture is to face off with Brock Lesnar, the former pro-wrestler who is now a rising star in among the UFC heavyweights. Lesnar is perhaps the biggest and strongest of the UFC heavyweights and his recent win against Heath Herring present him to be a real fighter.

This fight between Couture and Lesnar will be a title fight, and Couture is going to defend the UFC heavyweight title. The winner of this fight will fight the winner of Antonio Noguiera vs Frank Mir, who are fighting for the interim UFC Heavyweight title. Read more

Ken Shamrock will break Kimbo Slice’s Leg

Ken Shamrock

According to a sherdog interview, Shamrock is planning to break Kimbo’s leg if given the opportunity.

“Honestly, I think I can test him anywhere. He’s got big, heavy hands. Everyone says he punches hard and he probably does. But again, he doesn’t punch properly, in my opinion. He swings his hands, he moves his body back and forth trying to get as much power as he can, but there’s really no snap behind it. You can usually see the punches coming. I’m going to do what I need to do. If it goes to the ground, I’ll probably break his leg. I mean, no question. I will break his leg. If he gives it to me, I’m going to break it.”

Now this is what I like to hear. It’s great the Shamrock is addressing Kimbo’s weakness on the ground. Leg locks are very advanced jiu-jitsu techniques that require years experience and skill. And defending them is even harder to master. We all saw this when Brock Lesnar was submitted by Frank Mir via kneebar. Read more

Kimbo Slice vs Ken Shamrock in Elite XC

August 26, 2008 · Filed Under Uncategorized · Comment

kimbo vs shamrockLooks like Elite XC is going to play it safe and shamelessly promote their star fighter Kimbo Slice in another fight that can be argued as a strategy to keep Kimbo on a winning streak.

Ken Shamrock (26-13-2)– the 44-year-old UFC Hall of Famer, who has not won a professional fight in years — is the next guy to challenge Elite XC’s “superstar”, Kimbo Slice (3-0).
The fight will be the main event of “Saturday Night Fights” on CBS from the Bank Atlantic Center in Sunrise, Fla., on October 4.

Ken Shamrock was a among an extremely short list of next possible opponents for the former underground fighter Kimbo Slice. The list also included the internet legend Sean Gannon — a police officer and only man to defeat the Slice in an underground streetfight. Read more

We all heard of Quinton “Rampage” Jackson’s strange police chase in California, soon after his unanimous decision loss to Forrest Griffin at UFC 86: “Jackson vs. Griffin” back in July.

Recent reports have stated that:

“Quinton Jacskon is charged with one felony count of evading while driving recklessly, one felony count of evading the police officer, three misdemeanor counts of hit and run, and one misdemeanor reckless driving ….. However, he was NOT charged with DUI.….And, a few days after the incident, a pregnant woman in the car he hit on the freeway had a miscarriage, but Rampage was not charged for that after an investigation revealed that the miscarriage was unrelated to the accident”

So now, Rampage faces a maximum sentence of three years in prison — If he’s convicted on all charges. Read more

Ozzy Ozbourne at Affliction: Good or Bad?

August 25, 2008 · Filed Under Affliction · 1 Comment

Recently Affliction has announced that Ozzy Osbourne, a heavy metal legend, will be performing at the next Affliction event “Day of Reckoning”. The event is scheduled to take place on Saturday, Oct. 11 at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas where the heavyweights Andrei Arlovski and Josh Barnett is the main fight.

The first Affliction event, “Banned,” which was on July 19, featured musical performances by Megadeth, however this drew some mixed reactions, especially from the audience watching on ppv.

Is Ozzy Osbourne’s upcoming performance at Affliction 2 be good or bad for the event?

Here is a quick look:
Good
Target audience – Affliction shirts are strongly influenced by Heavy Metal music and caters to Heavy Metal and Ozzy fans.
Brand – Affliction’s brand as the Hardcore style is strongly enforced.
Differentiation – No one else it doing it, and can also be considered as bonus for PPV and in-arena fans.

Bad
Alienates Fans – MMA fans who hate heavy metal will not like it.
Distraction – A heavy metal concert doesn’t really belong in MMA fight event. It can conflict with the main purpose of the event, which is the competition of top level athletes.
Cheap – this can also be considered as a cheap ploy to make it seem that Affliction is giving more to the viewers. Read more
