UFC 89 Bisping vs Leben Fight Analysis Prediction

October 14, 2008 · Filed Under MMA Fight Analysis · Comment

ufc 89 Bisping vs LebenThe main event for UFC 89 features Michael Bisping vs Chris Leben on Oct 18, 2008 and will take place in England. There is no doubt that Bisping will have the fans behind him as he is the most popular British MMA Fighter. UFC 89 will air FREE on Spike TV so that is an added bonus.

Chris Leben (18-4-0) is a very aggressive striker. He’s got knockout power in both hands and has an amazingly strong chin, probably because he has a huge head. Surprisingly Leben has held a good position among the UFC Middleweights, despite the fact that he lacks a ground game. Look for Leben to come out with guns blazing as he likes to get in the face of all his opponents.

Michael Bisping (17-1-0) is also a very good striker as well, however, Bisping does not have devastating power, but has very crisp and technical strikes. His standup is excellent and has great footwork to position himself quickly with different striking angles. Wrestling is also one of Bisping’s strengths and has a great takedown defense, which probably is not needed against Leben.

In my opinion, I think that Bisping has the advantage. If the fight stays standing, Bisping is quicker on his feet and can definitely keep up with Leben’s fury. However, standing and striking with Leben is risky, as Leben is going for the knockout 100% of the time. Bisping should instead focus on taking the fight to the ground where he can have the upper hand and can control the fight.

Kimbo Slice Losses to Seth Petruzelli by TKO in Round One – video

October 5, 2008 · Filed Under MMA Fight Results · Comment

Seth Petruzelli was supposed to fight on the Oct.4th EliteXC undercard, but ended up in the main event with a brutal TKO win over one of the sports biggest celebrities —Kimbo Slice. Kimbo Slice’s original opponent, Ken Shamrock, was forced to back out of the main event because of an injury earlier that day. Seth Petruzelli entered the main event on the shortest of notice and took only 14 seconds to knock out Kimbo Slice in shocking fury.

I am not surprised with the outcome of this fight as Seth Petruzelli is a good MMA fighter. Kimbo Slice is a joke and has been hyped up and promoted to be an MMA superstar by Elite XC. The fact is that Kimbo sucks and everyone who knows about MMA knows this and sooner or later Kimbo would be exposed.

Anderson Silva Says He Will Retire Next Year

September 21, 2008 · Filed Under MMA Rumors · Comment

anderson silvaUFC middleweight champion, Anderson Silva was recently interviewed by Brazilian cable channel SporTV. for a show called “Sensei SporTV” which will air on September 27, but the editors released an excerpt from Anderson Silva speaking about his retirement from MMA:

I’ll retire next year, I already gave my all. I don’t need to prove anything for anyone and within one year I’ll put my gloves aside.”

What does this mean and why would Silva say this? Silva is the best pound for pound MMA fighter today at his prime and in the optimal stage of his career. He dominates the UFC Middlewieght division, and proves that he is also a formidable opponent in the Light-heavywieght division, with his recent defeat of James Irvin.

I hope that maybe this interview was taken out of context, because it would be a shame to see Silva stop fighting so soon. But, then we can’t blame him for wanting to stop.

Silva probably does not feel challenged and sounds like he might have grown bored. After all, he has walked through most of his opponents fairly easily. The UFC needs to step it up and start giving him more of the stacked light-heavywieght division.

Another interesting point is that Silva has an upcoming title fight with Patrick Cote. People seem to overlook this fight assume that Silva will win. (which is probably going to happen!)

We’ll have to wait and see any developments about Anderson Silva’s retirement plans…

affliction and golden boyAccording to ESPN: “Affliction has forged a partnership with Golden Boy Promotions — the monster boxing promotional company led by superstar Oscar De La Hoya — to co-promote future events that will feature mixed martial arts and boxing matches”

Aside from Fedor fighting on the main card, I think that a hybrid event of boxing and MMA is an overall terrible idea. Read more

Chuck Liddell Too Predictable? Should he Retire Soon?

September 11, 2008 · Filed Under MMA Rumors · Comment

chuck liddellChuck Liddell’s loss to Rashad Evans has brought about some questions about Chuck Liddell’s future in the UFC. Is Chuck Liddell becoming too predictable, are his opponents are starting to figure out his game and see the openings in his fighting style? Should Chuck Liddell retire soon?

In reference to Liddell’s predictability, he has lost 3 of his last 4 fights, two of which were by knockout. One was from Rampage and one from Evans, interestingly they both were in similar fashion. Not to mention Liddell also lost to Keith Jardine who trains with Rashad Evans at Greg Jackson’s camp. This is no coincidence, I think that the Greg Jackson has figured out a blueprint on how to defeat Liddell at his own game. Evans talked about how Greg Jackson kept training him on an overhand right, the same punch he used to knock out Liddell.

Chuck Liddell’s style is becoming more and more exposed: he fights with his hands down, enticing his opponents to engage, while he WAITS to counter with his loaded right fist. The same style that we all have grown to admire and become very familiar with.

Don’t get me wrong, Chuck Liddell is one of the best fighters out there, but something needs to change. The key to MMA is being multidimensional, and Liddell needs to mix it up a bit or get caught again. Read more
