Phillipe Nover is the Next GSP? TUF Season 8 Episode 8

November 5, 2008 · Filed Under The Ultimate Fighter Show · 1 Comment

In The Ultimate Fighter Season 8 Episode 8, the Lightwieght Phillipe Nover defeated Dave Kaplan. The fight was extremely fast, Nover landed several strong punches and overwhelmed Kaplan and went down. Kaplan gave his back and Nover swiftly submitted with a rear-naked choke.

Nover is the real deal. And looks like he’s on his way to winning the 155lb TUF. He has also really impressed Dana White, who described Nover as being similar to Georges St. Pierre. This description really does fit with Nover’s fighting style, and pound-for-pound power. It will be interesting to see how Nover will progress as he as has tons of potential and has the ability to be a very exciting fighter. Looking forward to see his next fight.

This episode was actually very refreshing as it didn’t focus too much on Junie Browing’s annoying temper tantrums. The show got back to its main focus of producing excting fights and insane pranks…. Sushi will never look the same.

Josh Koscheck vs Thiago Alves Fight Prediction Analysis

October 21, 2008 · Filed Under MMA Fight Analysis · Comment

First, its very cool of Josh Koscheck to step up on short notice and replace the injured Diego Sanchez. Koscheck will fight Thiago “Pitbull” Alves who is a powerful muay thai striker who has great momentum with recent upsets: TKO victories over top contenders Karo “The Heat” Parisyan and former champion Matt Hughes.

If Alves wins this fight, then he can boost himself to the top level of contenders for the Welterweight title shot. Thiago Alves has lot of knockout power in his punches and fierce Muay Thai knee strikes. Standing up would be the best strategy for Alves and make Koscheck work for any takedowns. Alves needs to sprawl, clinch and punish with knees. In addition, Alves is relatively big for a Welterweight.

Josh Koscheck has probably the best wrestling with superior takedowns. He is relentless and has proven to be a dominant force when he literally runs through his opponents for takedowns. Once he takes an opponent down, he overwhelms them and will stay in the dominant position. In his early days, Koscheck was known to have the “lay and pray” offense with smothering control top position of his opponent. What’s really significant is that Koscheck has consistently improved his stand up. He has progressed immensely with each fight and his kickboxing training has made him into a very impressive striker.

I give Josh Koscheck the advantage in this fight. He has insane takedown skill and is far superior on the ground than Alves. Koscheck has the experience to keep Alves’ strikes at a safe distance with his own formidable counter-striking game. I would look for Koscheck to capitalize on openings for takedowns to ground and pound. He just needs to be wary of Alves’ knee strikes. I predict for Koscheck to win via unanimous decision.

Elite XC Goes Out of Business

October 20, 2008 · Filed Under Uncategorized · 1 Comment

It is not surprising that Elite XC is now out of business, they were less than two years old but have amassed a huge debt and lost about $60 million dollars. On top of that Elite XC had to deal with the UFC marketing powerhouse. Very slim chance of Elite XC ever really making it through without having any Pay Per View events. Although they drew good ratings on their free network events on CBS, there was no real money there.

Also they were facing troubles with the controversy of Elite XC’s recent Kimbo vs Petruzelli fight and whether Elite XC tried to influence the outcome of the fight. It’s easy to see that Elite XC was in no business of being in the fight business.

Well… so long ProElite and Elite XC. You had me at free CBS fight shows, and Gina Carano.

Anyways, it will be interesting to see what develops of the Elite XC shutdown: Are fighters going to get paid for their recent fight? Which of the fighters will go to UFC, Affliction? What’s going to happen to Kimbo, is this the last we see of him? Probably check youtube later to see if Kimbo fights at another backyard barbeque.

UFC 89 Brandon Vera vs Keith Jardine Fight Analysis Prediction

October 14, 2008 · Filed Under MMA Fight Analysis · Comment

Brandon “The Truth” Vera (9-2) and Keith “The Dean Of Mean” Jardine (13-5-1) are going to fight each other in UFC 89 on Oct. 18, 2008. This fight is very significant as both fighters need to redeem themselves after their last disappointing performances, a victory in UFC 89 can to establish themselves as top contenders at 205 pounds.

Keith Jardine, was a product of The Ultimate Fighter season 2. Recently he has had very inconsistent performances of wins and losses. He beat Chuck Liddell, Wilson Gouveia and dominated current Light-heavyweight champ Forrest Griffin. However, he lost a decision to Stephan Bonner and was knocked out in within the first minute by Houston Alexander and Wanderlei Silva (Jardine was KTFO!) These inconsistent performances can be attributed to Jardine’s aggressiveness and unorthodox fighting stances. He usually rushes into his opponent like an animal, which has left him wide open, but sometimes it works, like when he fought Forrest Griffin. Anyways, Jardine trains out of the Greg Jackson camp, the same as GSP and Rashad Evans. So that might be an advantage.

Brandon Vera was originally a heavyweight, but he was on the smaller side and his move to light-heavyweight is better suited for his frame. Vera’s last fight against Resse Andy was not exciting at all, Vera won by decision but he seemed really out of shape. Perhaps he cut weight too aggressively. Regardless, Vera is a very formidable opponent with very well rounded skills. He is a top Muay Thai fighter and also has great submission skills, trains with submission specialist Lloyd Irvin. The main question for Vera is if he has trained and conditioned himself to be more explosive.

This is a very important fight for both Jardine and Vera, simply because a victory would give them the momentum to stay alive in the race for title contention in the Light-Heavyweight division. A loss in this fight can be very detrimental in each fighter’s quest for the belt.

I give this fight to Vera because he is the more technical fighter, has a better chin (Jardine’s chin is unpredictable) and Vera has excellent submission skills. What’s also important is that Vera can handle considerably bigger and stronger opponents as he did when he was a heavyweight.
