Affliction and Golden Boy partnership, will hybrid MMA-boxing event be a good idea?

September 15, 2008 · Filed Under Affliction

affliction and golden boyAccording to ESPN: “Affliction has forged a partnership with Golden Boy Promotions — the monster boxing promotional company led by superstar Oscar De La Hoya — to co-promote future events that will feature mixed martial arts and boxing matches”

Aside from Fedor fighting on the main card, I think that a hybrid event of boxing and MMA is an overall terrible idea.

The fact is, most MMA fans, whether they are casual or die-hard fans, don’t like boxing and won’t pay to watch boxing. More importantly, why would someone want to sit through 10 rounds of boxing while waiting to see an MMA fight? Unless it’s Oscar de La Hoya vs Manny Pacquiao, but how often will that happen?

If anything, this will only convert more people from boxing into MMA. When they see boxing and MMA side by side, people will realize how much more interesting and entertaining MMA is.

Regardless if it converts more MMA fans, Affliction needs to decide what they are trying to do. So far they have added on a lot to their events: an Ozzy Osbourne concert and now… boxing.

These add-ons can be potential distractions to their end goal, assuming that their end goal is to be one of the best fight promotion companies.

Maybe Affliction should go back to just selling t-shirts? They are pretty good at that.
